Re: Phantom softtail vs squirrelly Hellhound
Phantom soft-tails get my vote when comparing the two. Regular hellhounds and then phantom soft-tails are some of my go-to baits in the spring.

Re: Reels for big blades
Lexa 400 in the 6.3:1 or 5.1:1 as Jon said. I prefer the 5.1:1 for big blades - you do have to work a little harder to burn them, but I feel it doesn't put as much wear on the reel when using the lower gear ratio.

Re: New Muskie Fisherman / Fall Trolling
I mainly cast, but the trolling I have done has been similar to what Scott described. Look for bait and try to have your lures in that depth zone. I think 3-3.5 is a speed the majority of people will recommend at this time as well. I'd look to get Musky Mike's Trolling Secrets book as it has depth c...

Re: Top producer
Not sure on exact bait, but double 10 bucktails is my top producing bait type followed by bulldawg. I have a nickel/nickel cowgirl that has caught a lot of fish for me so I would guess that's my number 1 bait. I've used it so much one of the clevices broke so it's a single ten right now. Still gets ...

Re: Webster lake
There usually is a decent open water bite on those lakes as the main forage is Shad. There are a handful of deep holes throughout the lake, so feel free to cast those with rubber baits such as bulldawgs, medussas, and kickin' minnows. It's definitely a different type of fishing as you're not casting...

Re: Reel?
300 will suit you well for most applications. The only application I prefer the 400 is for big bucktails. I only have the regular Lexas though so the HDs might be a different beast. I'm sure Will can chime in though along with a handful of other people on the board.

Re: Banquet Thank-You
This is the quote in context from the paper Patrick referenced. “The high exploitation on muskellunge observed in Elk and Skegemog lakes likely impacts both size structure and abundance to some degree. While the size structure is still very good, it could probably be even better. The impact of harv...

Re: Banquet Thank-You
. What was the remarkable stat he gave at the end of the presentation? A 2% increase in harvest is equivalent to a 30% decrease in reproduction output? . 2% increase in annual mortality would lead to a 70% decrease in reproduction output. That's insane! I'm obviously biased, but that seems like a n...

Re: Banquet Thank-You
I wish I would have asked him a follow up question when I asked him about artificial habitat. What do they do the best on, like cabbage, if so if the lakes that they are put in don't have the best habitat, should this be put into this lake. I believe they reproduce best in current/river situations....

A big thanks to everyone involved! I really enjoyed the speaker as well; he presented a lot of good information, but also kept it simple for us laymens. Re: New sonar/gps suggestions
I just picked up a humminbird 899 ci. Seems like a great unit but this is my first real fish finder. Anybody have any pointers on setup and using it? Take it out in early spring and just tinker with it on the water. It may be tough to be on the water and not fishing, but just take an afternoon and ...

Might want to do some shopping today on Cyber Monday. I saw some on Cabela's around 300-400 off.
