Muskellunge Survey - Please Participate

Post by Will Schultz » Mon Apr 28, 2014 6:50 pm

There is a one year survey, on the lakes listed below, to gather information on muskellunge fishing (effort and catch). There are or will be boxes placed at access sites with survey cards. The cards can be complete and mailed or the survey can be completed online. This online option is much easier to do for you and makes it easier to compile the data for the DNR. If you visit one of these waters grab a card from the box and it has the link below as well as a QR code that you can scan with your smartphone.

If you fished any of the LP lakes over the weekend (or any of the UP lakes starting 5/15/14) and each time you fish them until 3/15/15 please complete the survey. This information helps biologists manage these fisheries. Next year the survey will rotate to another 15-20 waters.

LP Lakes
Bellaire
Belleville
Black
Budd
Hamiln
Intermediate
Long, Grand Traverse
Margrethe
Murray
Winyah
Wixom

UP Lakes
Chicagon
Emily
Kingston
McKeever

**Note**
The first question currently says: Date Muskellunge Caught, it should say "Date You Fished" and is being corrected.

Yeah- the cards look like the survey is intended for angler effort information, and the online survey only asks about catch information. ?

The two surveys are actually nothing alike, not just the first question. So a little confusing and hopefully all will get straightened out quickly!
Check again. The first couple questions that ask about Date Caught, Water Caught are the concern because we want every trip reported not just successful trips. Everything else asks the same questions concerning release, length, method, fishing for, start and end time of trip.

Were you fishing for Muskellunge or another type of fish?
*Yes
*Another type of fish

LOL. Shouldn't that be changed to *Muskellunge instead of *Yes?

Hmm... Makes sense to me the way it's written.

The box is up at long. I'll make sure to fish it at least once and fill out a survey though it might include some foul language on the card.
If I'm not going to catch fish. I might as well not be catching Muskies...

Yes, we're in a discussion about that. Someone wants it kept that way.

I still reported a skunking, just left all the parts about catching blank.

Will, do they not want skunkings reported? I know I get skunked more often than I catch fish... seems to me they are just as important to report as catches.

Yes, report all trips not just successful trips.

Should everyone in your fishing party fill out a survey individually or should this be one per boat? I'm assuming individually.
A fish in the sewer is better than none in the pool, or something, I think -Duke

Yes as long as you don't duplicate fish caught.

I'll be fishing at least 5 of these lakes this year, I'll be sure to fill out a survey for every trip out. Headed up to Iron County later in the year, my first time ever muskie fishing last year, and managed to land one on both Emily and Chicagon. Was the last day of our trip and I can't wait to get back up there! Got me hooked.
