Lake Ovid advice/tips.

Post by BKilla_13 »

I am new to the sport (I have never actually caught one) and I live only 3 miles from Lake Ovid. I am an avid pike fisher but have never attempted to catch the Big Brother. Nobody worry as I catch and release everything but perch and take great care when handling game fish. That being said if anyone has any tips on fishing Lake Ovid I prefer to cast but will troll if its easier to locate fish. I have fished the lake a bunch of times but only once on a boat and never for muskie. Are there still good numbers of muskie there? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sorry, BKilla. But in all seriousness, check out the fishing reports. They date back to 2005, and there are plenty of posts about Ovid in there. You can only access this if you are a member of MMA. If you are not a member, you are missing out on a lot of info....

There ARE no muskies in Ovid!

He can't see the reports because he's not an MMA member (yet!). Shoot me a PM if you do join and I'll hook you up.

You don't need to troll in Ovid, though you can. In May, the lake will be full of curly-leaf pondweed. Cast up tight to the weed edges near points and humps, and even rip lures through it. You'll have a good chance of catching some!

[smilie=sign-back2topic.gif] There are no muskies in Ovid, but if there WERE, my advice should work.

Ovid is a GREAT place to catch your first, or any muskie! There is a good enough population that you don't have to get too fancy to have success. Use your tried and true pike methods, concentrating on weed edges and any prominent structure. You may need to beef up your pike gear however, as there are some dandy muskies in there.

Like this 45.5" one, which developed a taste for my blood! [smilie=attention.gif]

Being serious for just a moment: our organization worked with the DNR tagging muskies in Ovid for the second half of last year, and we put tags in about 90 fish. They're in there, and fishable! If I can catch one, you can, too. [smilie=biggrin.gif]

Thanks for all the replys. I will join as soon as I catch my first one. Dont wanna be the guy who joins a motorcycle gang without a motorcycle. I did read that you guys tagged 90 of 'em last year, that made me happy to hear. Again thanks for all the replys. This seems like an awesome site.

Our organization does a lot of great things for the muskie fishery, which is primarily why I joined:

And before you go out, take a look at our Info/Tips page, to make it better and easier for you and the fish:

We'd love to have you as a member, and there's no better way to shortcut catching your first one than by going through our Members Only forum. Welcome!

Thanks. I would like to join and probably will soon. I would love to get my hands on some "inside information". I have read the tips page and have taken notes on how to keep the fish safe. That is one thing that I never mess around with. I try my hardest to make sure that any fish I catch, from the 12" bass to the 38" pike, make it to be caught another day and more important live to reproduce. Thanks for the advice.

He doesn't need to see that. Suffice it to say, the muskies aren't the only thing those tips help keep safe...
