I am ready to try flyfishing for muskie. Just a quick question about leaders. I was going to run a straight section of Fluorocarbon, anyone use anything else? Thanks, Scott

Me personally no I have not done it, however, I ran into some guys from the Trout Unlimited chapter at the Traverse City Expo I worked and we got to talking about flyfishing for pike and muskies. You may want to try a trout fishing chatboard or something flyfishing related maybe they will have some ideas they are willing to share.

Fluorocarbon should be fine. I use hard-finish Maxima Chameleon, which is stiff enough to turn over well without flopping. Use something in the 20-lb. area if you are going to go non-tapered and just a single weight. If you taper, try going from 40# (at the fly line) to 30# to 20# at the bait, and the fly should present itself a little better than with the straight 20#. But it will all work. Then of course, a short length of nylon-coated braided wire of around 20# in front of the fly. Tyger wire would probably work as well as the standard coated wire.
For the complete treatment, see Larry Dahlberg's article in the May 1992 In-Fisherman if you know somebody that has the issues going back that far.

3-6' of 30# hard mono or stiff flouro will work. You can surgeon knot a wire bite tippet onto the leader, 30# coated wire is all you'll need. There's no need to taper it when your leader doesn't need to be longer than 3'.
