The Great Lakes are one of the most treasured - and coveted - of all the nation's natural resources. As such, there is a constant strain placed on the lakes and their fragile ecosystem from a variety of sources: parched communities who want access to the water, a wide range of invasive species, ineffective sewer systems, feuding governmental bodies, recreational and industrial use and an outdated St. Lawrence Seaway. These issues, and how they are dealt with, could well determine the future of these essential bodies of water.
