A new look for fishing guide
A new look for fishing guide

Anglers can expect Michigan's 2008 fishing guides to have a new look and format when they hit fishing license dealer shelves in the next couple of weeks.
The 32-page fishing guide will be larger than the old one and more readable. It will now have commercial ads and will be published on an annual basis once again.
DNR staffers say the agency is no longer publishing the guide. It will maintain oversight of the content, but the physical production will be handled by Liberty Press, a Utah firm that publishes hunting and/or fishing guides for 12 other states.
The company will also be publishing Michigan's 2008 fall hunting guide.
"The advertising revenues (for the fishing guide) are going to cover the production costs," said Dick Morscheck with the DNR office of communications. "It's going to be a zero-cost arrangement for the DNR and it will save nearly $200,000 in Game and Fish Protection Fund revenues."
Just over 1.1 million copies will be published and distributed around the state along with 500,000 copies of the state's Trout and Salmon Guide.
The 2008 Fishing Guide is expected to hit the shelves this week, while the Trout and Salmon Guide is expected to come out in the first week of March.
The decision to publishing them annually again, rather than every two years like the 2006 Fishing Guide which expires March 31, is to allow for more flexibility in changing the regulations.
Initially, the agency hoped to save money by publishing the guide every two years, but found it needed more flexibility to deal with rule changes driven by crisis situations like the spread of VHS (viral hemorrhagic septicemia) in 2007, which required closing some waters.
The new guide will be printed on newsprint in 2008, rather than glossy paper, according to Morscheck.
Liberty Press, the publishing company, didn't start selling ads until September 2007, too late for many prospective buyers.
"We anticipate seeing the paper quality improve as we go forward and as more advertisers buy space," he said.
DNR executives decided in early 2007 to revisit the question of contracting out the work with hopes that they might develop a "no-cost" alternative, in light of an anticipated budget deficit.

Becky Humphries mentioned the new design of the fishing guide and potential advertising financing when we had dinner few weeks ago. She did point out that this first edition is not perfect gloss quality, but it would get the regulations out which is the most important. The later editions will make upgrades as the normal first edition bugs are worked out.
I would jump at the chance to have KTD sign in the next glossy fishing guide. That would be big a win/win for MMA and DNR. The MMA could meet nonprofit educational requirement by seeking a grant to put the 'fisheries education' in front of every licensed sport fisher in the state! The DNR should be pleased to be a partner getting the ad financing to help them promote 'fisheries education'. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, step one is to check out the details (cost & fesibility). It doesn't cost anything to give Todd Grischke a phone call.

Of course, but we need dreams don't we? Without dreams there wouldn't even be an MMA.Hamilton Reef wrote: But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, step one is to check out the details (cost & fesibility). It doesn't cost anything to give Todd Grischke a phone call.
Self interest is for the past, common interest is for the future.

I though, in order to save money, they weren't going to publish a new guide this year, since the last one was meant to to cover 2006-2008!
